Why we built this...

Hi - I'm Jill!

I'm the founder of Want To Work There and a former Director of People and Culture in the tech startup space.

Four years ago I found myself completely unprepared to navigating election season in our organization. With no budget to hire an outside consultant for support, I desperately searched for a guide to help ensure I was asking the right questions and making sound decisions.

Sadly, I never found one. So this time around -with help from some brilliant friends - I decided to build it.

Our hope is that this toolkit helps you navigate a tricky season with less stress and more confidence, knowing you have everything you need at right at your fingertips!

Inside the Toolkit

What You'll Find In This Extensive Guide

Part 1  (Live Now!)

Choosing Your Approach

Part one is focused on helping you thoughtfully answer one specific question: “What is our company’s approach to navigating politics at work?” By the end of it, you'll be able to confidently answer questions, including:

  • Who is responsible for making that decision?

  • How will the decision be made?

  • What options do we even have to choose from?

  • What’s the best way to gather internal opinions?

  • How do we move past discussions and make an actual decision?

Part 2  (Sept 10th)

Operationalizing Your Decision

Part two is all about putting operational structure behind your desired approach, so that the decision can come to life across the organization. This part of the toolkit will help you navigate a variety of areas, including:

  • What behaviors do we need to champion?

  • Do we need to create or update any policies?

  • How can we effectively communicate our approach to the organization?

  • What training and support do we need to provide our managers, so they feel prepared and confident?

Part 3  (Sept 17th)

Navigating The Rollout

You’ve put in the work - now it’s time to roll your decision out to the company. Depending on the approach you’ve chosen and the culture of your organization, this announcement may be delicate to navigate or something you know will be well received. Either way, you'll be prepared to answer:

  • What is the best channel for making our announcement and who should it come from?

  • How transparent should we be about the why behind our decision? What is helpful versus harmful?

  • How do we create space for employee reactions, while still adhering to our chosen approach?

Part 4  (Oct 2nd)

Election Day

Part four addresses the many aspects that are unique to election day and the following weeks. From proactively addressing employee voting opportunities (including those that are legally required) to preparing speaking points for a company-wide address, there are a few last things to consider.

  • Will employees have time off to go vote?

  • Should our leadership team address the company when election results are released?

  • What resources are available to employees who may be struggling with the election results?
